The West Ridge of Mount Tupper
The West Ridge of Mount Tupper
Rogers Pass is situated in the heart of the Selkirk mountain range and has been one of the main centres of alpine activities for more then 120 years. It is the birthplace of mountaineering in North America.
The West Ridge of Mt Tupper is one of the very best classics in Rogers Pass which says a lot about the excellent quality of this route. It dominates the northern skyline when seen from highway 1 when passing through Rogers Pass. The climbing is on solid quartzite rock and the position of the whole route, let alone the summit views, are spectacular! To make this trip more manageable we climb it in two days.
Although Mt Tupper is not the highest peak in the region it still requires a good effort. From the parking lot to the peak, the total elevation gain is 1500 meters (5000 feet). Most of the climbing is scrambling but there are short sections of 5.6 climbing on the ridge proper. A good level of fitness is required along with previous scramblingand climbing experience.
Due to route length and long approaches, most peaks in the Rogers Pass require a minimum of 2 days. With that in mind it is possible to add a third day to climb 2 routes over that 3 day period from our campsite. Other routes that could be combined with this one could be Rogers Peak or Hermit Mountain traverse.
