Outline
This course focuses on personal skill development for beginners and people that want to move out from the indoor walls. We aim to build a foundation in industry standard systems. Areas that are emphasized include hazard management, related communications and movement skills, rope and equipment handling, knots and systems, traditional and fixed protection use, belay systems and anchors, and leading strategies.
Students will have the opportunity to lead climb by the end of the course.
Objectives/Outcomes
1. Demonstrate competence with associated knots and hitches.
2. Demonstrate application of introductory industry standard systems related to spot climbing including: belays, protection placement and anchor construction.
3. Demonstrate industry standard climbing communication ability.
4. Lead climbs on fixed routes.
Course Topics
Knots and hitches: Figure 8 follow through, figure 8 on a bight, clove hitch, Munter hitch, prussic hitch, double fishermans.
Rope management: Mountaineers and lap coils, stacking, handling, and care.
Belaying: Communications, bottom up belays, top belays, lead belays (including falling clinics), direct and redirect belays.
Rappelling: Devices, prussic back up, fireman’s backup, retrievable system, tying off.
Safety awareness: Hazard recognition and management, safety system discipline.
Climbing ability and movement: Body position, balance, relaxed and efficient, reading the rock etc.
Anchors: Tree and fixed anchors, top rope construction, multi directional anchors when using gear, load distribution, angles, and forces, etc.
